It has been a super duper busy Parkrose summer! School has begun for the 2012-2013 school year. The children have arrived and the schools look great!
Shaver, Prescott and Russell Elementary schools were under construction this summer. It actually began before the students left for the summer when our teachers and staff began to pack up their classrooms, carefully getting rid of everything that was unneeded, broken and not useful. Everybody worked really hard!
So what exactly happened this summer at our schools?
Shaver: Shaver Elementary School got all new floors and all of the asbestos was removed. That is really good news for our kids and staff. They got a new more efficient boiler for heating and had lots of work done on their water system. The school was updated and modernized with new technology infrastructure as well as new security cameras and new iPads for staff and for kids. Training on how to best use the new technology for learning will follow soon. Shaver got new steps leading to the stage as well and new classroom sinks and counter tops.
Russell: Russell Academy of Academic Achievement got all new floors and all new windows. That means that the asbestos in the floor tiles and in the windows was also removed. Russell got a huge technology and security upgrade and also received new iPad technology for staff and students. This new technology can be used for assessments and for learning lots of new things individually and in groups. The water system at Russell was worked on, as were the bathrooms. Check out the new gym floor! Russell also got new sinks and counter tops.
Prescott: Prescott Elementary School got the largest remodel and the most work this summer. The front office suite was beautifully remodeled as was the media center and library. Prescott got a new staff lounge and staff workroom plus a newly remodeled kitchen and cafeteria. Prescott had its heating, ventilation and water systems upgraded and modernized. The bathrooms for the students are classy, super clean and modern. The tiles and restroom fixtures are all new. Finally, Prescott received upgrades in security, technology and all new floors. All of the antique and richly colored wood paneling was sanded and stained anew. Prescott got new sinks and counter tops. They even got a beautiful new gym floor and stage curtains. They got new iPads for staff and students. Prescott looks like a brand new school and don’t our kids deserve it? Yes, they do and you, the Parkrose taxpayers, made it happen for our kids.
So what’s next? The next projects for the district are three new multipurpose rooms/flexible learning spaces at Russell, Sacramento and Shaver. Sacramento is getting a remodel of its old offices, enclosed kindergarten and first grade classroom corridors and a new school office suite. It will also get upgrades in technology, heating, water systems and security. Next spring, our new Parkrose Middle School will start to be built for a grand opening in the fall of 2014.
There are many people to thank for so much hard work on these bond projects. As usual, everyone has pulled together to do great things for kids. Thank you!

These are pictures taken in the third week of June 2012, following the big move out of Prescott, Russell & Shaver buildings. Everything in the buildings had to be moved to storage containers so they could pull up the floors in all three buildings as part of the Asbestos Abatement. Some pictures were taken of the damage they found underneath the flooring.

Which building do you think needed the most storage containers, Prescott, Russell or Shaver?

Buildings Under Construction Summer 2012: Prescott, Russell & Shaver
Prescott Family Community Association (PFCA) Parent Group met for their monthly meeting on March 13, 2012. Dull Olson Weekes - IBI Group Architects, Incorporated (DOWA), Dan Hess briefed the group on the status of the Prescott Remodel Design.
Below is a copy of the Prescott Cost Estimate Options Analysis he provided at that meeting. Please note, the bid alternates are not rated by priority. If funds are available for bid alternates the Bond Executive Team and School Board will determine what bid alternates will keep us on budget.

February 8, 2012 Prescott Staff Design Participants selected their flooring material and color preferences.
January 26, 2012 Prescott Staff Design Participants rated their preferred design options. Above is a three-dimensional cast of a classroom alcove.
The Prescott staff who participated in this rating process did not rate classroom alcoves as a priority design option.
These classroom alcoves have high educational implications for small group instruction. They could make Prescott classrooms a showcase of 21st century education at it's best. These classroom alcoves will remain a bid alternate.
Prescott Elementary School was constructed in 1947 with subsequent additions in 1959, and building upgrades in 1996. The facility includes a Gym & Stage, Library, Student Services Room, Cafeteria, Kitchen, Classrooms, Administration Areas, Playground and two covered Play Areas. The total area of the school buildings is approximately 50,000 sf on a 5.75 acre site.
The Facility report of June 2009 identified a number of issues that needed to be addressed. These included mechanical and electrical upgrades, roof repairs, and architectural finishes that are worn and dated. The District has also identified a significant amount of asbestos abatement that needs to occur in this facility.
In addition to the physical condition of the building, of equal significance is the need to update the building programmatically so that it can support the type of learning that is currently occurring in the building. In particular, the building is deficient in the following key areas:
• Small group spaces for individualized learning, particularly in areas adjacent to classrooms
• A dedicated computer lab for testing and instruction
• Appropriately sized spaces for special programs, including ELL and Emerging Skills
• Administration and staff areas that are appropriately sized and designed for the functions that occur in them
• A kitchen and cafeteria that is functional and up to date
A series of meetings were held in November and December of 2011 with District staff, Prescott Staff, and Community members to further discuss these issues and identify the needs of this project. In addition, the District held a series of meetings to determine the portions of the District-wide budget that would be assigned to Prescott. Based on these discussions a Base Scope has been identified and a series of 11 Design Options for various parts of the facility have been identified.
